The S Pen is a stylus that assists in performing different functions on specific devices. Switch between touch and pen input by using the S Pen button.
IMPORTANT:Galaxy Note 5 S Pens should be inserted correctly into the holder in the phone, with the tip inserted first. Failure to do so may result in damage to the S Pen and also the device:
NOTE: If the S Pen has been inserted incorrectly do NOT attempt to remove the S Pen. Contact Samsung support, either online at http://www.samsung.com/us/support/, or by phone at 1-800-SAMSUNG (1-800-726-7864).
Troubleshooting S Pen Issues
S Pen Sensor Damage
Symptoms that indicate troubleshooting for the S Pen may be required include:
Device indicates S Pen is not inserted when it is inserted
Quick Controls for S Pen do not display when the S Pen is removed
Writing a note on the lock screen does not function
S Pen cannot be removed from the Note 5
NOTE: To get the best performance and features, confirm the device has the latest software by going to the Home screen and touching Apps > Settings > System Update > Update now.
If Quick Controls For S Pen Do Not Display When the S Pen Is Removed
If the Quick Controls for S Pen do not display when the S Pen is removed, that option may have been turned off. From the Home screen touch Apps > Settings > S Pen > Air command, and verify whether Detach S Pen to turn on is On or Off.
Configure S Pen Settings
To configure S Pen settings, from the Home screen touch Apps > Settings > S Pen.
Select all options that need to be turned on for S Pen to work normally. See the device User Manual for additional details.
Air command Not Working
If the Air command menu does not open when the S Pen is detatched from the device or when hovering the S Pen over the screen with the S Pen button pressed, the customer may have disabled Air command on the device.
To enable or disable Air command, from the Home screen touch Apps > Settings > S Pen > Air command.
If either of the Air command options were turned off, after turning them on confirm that it is functioning as expected by following these steps:
Hold the S Pen slightly above the screen.
Press the S Pen button.
The Air Command shortcuts menu should display.
If the Air Command shortcuts menu does not display, the S Pen button may be damaged. See pictures below for details:
Damaged S Pen button: The button is pushed below the surface of the S Pen:
Undamaged S Pen button: The button is level with the S Pen surface.
Products That May Affect the S Pen & Note Digitizer Sensitivity
Some screen protectors are rubbery and may affect how S Pen moves across the screen.
Screen Film problem:
Hard or rubbery surface when writing.
Uneven surface will affect the consistence when writing.
Thickness of screen protector can affect the screen sensitivity.
Dirty or old screen protector.
Remove the screen protector and retest with the S Pen.
Magnetic Casing Covers:
3rd Party cases may affect the sensitivity of the Smartphone's digitizer and can affect the S Pen functionality. Sometimes the case manufacturer may include a magnet that is too strong in the cover and this may lead to device or S Pen malfunction.
Remove the case and retest the S Pen function.
Replacing the S Pen Tip:
It is recommended to replace the S Pen tip when it becomes worn down and does not work properly.
To Replace the S Pen Tip:
Use tweezers to pull out the S Pen tip. (1)
Insert the new pen tip on the top of the S Pen and press until it clicks in place (2).
